Gallery Districts in Copenhagen

Key areas where contemporary art galleries are concentrated across the city.

Copenhagen's gallery geography is compact in scale but unusually divided in tone, with each area supporting a different relation between market visibility, exhibition format, and artistic production. In the inner city, especially around Bredgade, the gallery scene is more established and commercially legible, shaped by long-running programs, collector networks, and a closer relationship to the city's formal cultural core. Vesterbro, and particularly Kodbyen, introduces a different density: former industrial spaces give galleries more flexibility for installation, painting, and cross-disciplinary presentations, while the area's rougher architectural setting supports a less polished but still internationally connected commercial profile.

Nordvest operates at another scale altogether. Its larger spaces allow galleries to stage ambitious exhibitions that would be difficult to accommodate in the older central districts, making the area important for conceptual, sculptural, and spatially demanding practices. Beyond these main concentrations, smaller project spaces and artist-led initiatives appear across less centralized parts of the city, reinforcing a distribution in which contemporary art galleries in Copenhagen are not organized by a single district but by a sequence of distinct spatial conditions.

About 1 Cubic Meter 1 Cubic Meter

1 Cubic Meter is an editorial map of contemporary art venues and exhibitions, built city by city to document where contemporary art is produced, presented, supported, and encountered.

The project is built on a principle of horizontality, both geographic and qualitative. It gives attention to scenes outside the established circuit alongside the major capitals, and approaches a small artist-run space with the same editorial care as a long-standing institution. Each entry is the outcome of editorial selection, a curatorial reading of contemporary art across painting, sculpture, installation, performance, moving image, and other current practices.

We maintain the map continuously, with its focus kept entirely on contemporary art.
